Some furniture arrives finished and some arrives in a box with an allen key. Which one you get is not really a decision the retailer makes about you. It is a decision about what shape survives a shipping container and a doorway.
The rule underneath it is simple. A rigid box with drawers in it travels safely as a rigid box, so it ships built. Anything that is a large flat surface plus four legs travels far better as a flat surface plus four legs, so it ships apart.
Which Pieces Normally Arrive Fully Assembled?
Case goods with drawers. In the Cedora range that means every tallboy, every bedside table and every dining chair arrives built, along with most chests, most sideboards and most TV units.
The reason is structural. A drawer unit gets its strength from the box being square, and a box assembled in a factory with proper clamps is squarer than one assembled on a lounge room floor. Shipping it built protects the thing that makes it work.
| Piece | Normally arrives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tallboy | Fully assembled | Drawer alignment depends on a square carcass |
| Bedside table | Fully assembled | Small enough to ship built |
| Dining chair | Fully assembled | Joints are glued and clamped in the factory |
| Chest of drawers | Usually assembled | Same reason as the tallboy |
| Sideboard and TV unit | Usually assembled | Doors need the carcass square to hang right |
| Bed frame | Always flat pack | A 200cm frame will not go up a staircase built |
| Dining table | Always flat pack | A top plus legs travels flat and safely |
| Coffee, side and console tables | Usually flat pack | Legs attach in minutes |
Why Are Bed Frames Always Flat Pack?
Because an assembled queen bed is 171cm wide and 224cm long, and nothing that size goes through an 820mm doorway, around a stair landing or into a lift. Even if it could be shipped built, it could not be delivered.
Every Cedora bed frame is supplied flat with assembly required and two people recommended. That is not a corner cut, it is the only way the piece gets into the room. The same logic applies to dining tables: all 33 in the range arrive as a top and a set of legs.
If you would rather know what taking one apart again looks like, that is in how to disassemble a bed frame.

Is Assembled Furniture Better Quality?
Not by itself. What assembled buys you is factory accuracy on the joints that matter, and it removes the most common cause of a piece failing early, which is somebody over tightening a bolt into a threaded insert and stripping it.
What flat pack buys you is access. A piece that arrives in three flat cartons goes up a narrow staircase that an assembled one cannot. In an apartment or an older terrace that is not a minor advantage.
The quality question sits elsewhere: in whether the joints are mechanical rather than glued alone, and whether you can tighten the piece again in five years. We went through that in furniture rarely wears out, it comes loose.
What Should I Check When It Arrives Assembled?
Look at the piece before the driver leaves, not after. Assembled furniture takes its knocks in transit rather than in your lounge room, so damage shows up at corners, on the top surface and along the bottom edge.
- Run a hand along every corner and top edge
- Open and close each drawer fully, listening for a scrape
- Check the piece sits flat without rocking
- Look at the back panel, which is where transit damage hides
Photograph anything you find while the carton is still there. A mark reported on the day is a straightforward conversation and one reported a fortnight later is not.

What Should I Do Differently With Flat Pack?
Three habits change the outcome more than anything else.
Assemble in the room it will live in. Not in the garage, not in the hallway. An assembled bed frame does not fit back through the door it came in by.
Start every bolt by hand, and start all of them before tightening any. A bolt driven in at an angle cuts a new thread and strips the insert. A joint fully tightened before the others are started pulls the frame out of square.
Stop at firm. These are bolts into timber, not engine bolts. The quarter turn past firm is what pulls the insert loose, and a loose insert is why a bed squeaks a month later.
Put a blanket down before you start and keep the hardware bag where you can see it. Both of those sound obvious and both of them are the reason assemblies go badly.
How Long Does Assembly Actually Take?
For a piece described as easy to assemble, meaning legs onto a top, budget 15 to 30 minutes with two people. For a bed frame, budget an hour for the first one and half that for any after it.
The two people part is not politeness. A queen bed frame in this range runs 40kg to 99kg assembled, and the moment where a side rail is held on one bolt is the moment a frame gets damaged or a wrist does.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does furniture arrive assembled or flat packed?
It depends on the shape. Drawer units such as tallboys, bedside tables and most chests arrive fully assembled because their strength depends on a square carcass. Bed frames and dining tables always arrive flat, because an assembled one will not fit through a doorway.
Why do bed frames always come flat packed?
Because an assembled queen frame is 171cm wide and 224cm long, which does not pass an 820mm doorway, a stair landing or a lift. Shipping it flat is the only way it gets into the room.
Is assembled furniture better than flat pack?
Not automatically. Assembled gives you factory accuracy on the joints and removes the risk of a stripped fixing. Flat pack gives you access to rooms an assembled piece cannot reach. In an apartment or a terrace, that access is worth more than the accuracy.
How long does flat pack furniture take to assemble?
Fifteen to thirty minutes with two people for a table where legs attach to a top. About an hour for a first bed frame. Assemble in the room the piece will live in, because a built bed frame will not fit back out through the door.
What should I check when assembled furniture is delivered?
Check it before the driver leaves. Run a hand along every corner and the top edge, open and close each drawer fully, make sure it does not rock, and look at the back panel where transit damage hides. Photograph anything you find on the day.
