Furniture Rarely Wears Out. It Comes Loose, and Always in the Same Three Places.

Furniture Rarely Wears Out. It Comes Loose, and Always in the Same Three Places.

Short answer: timber furniture almost never fails at the timber. It fails at the fixings, the drawer runners and the veneer edges. Those three account for most of what sends a piece to the kerb, and all three are affected far more by how often it is moved than by how old it is.

Which is why lifespan questions have such unsatisfying answers. A chest that stays in one room for fifteen years and a chest that moves house four times in five are the same chest with completely different outcomes.

The Three Failure Points

Fixings. Every bolt, cam lock and screw loses grip each time it is undone and redone. In solid pine a screw hole can be plugged and redrilled. In MDF the hole crumbles and the fixing never holds properly again. This is the single biggest reason flat pack furniture does not survive a move.

Drawer runners. Metal runners outlast timber ones by a wide margin, but they are also the part carrying the most load. A drawer holding 57 litres of folded clothing, as the Liverpool chest does, puts real weight on a pair of runners every single day.

Veneer edges. A veneer lifts where it wraps a corner, and corners are where furniture gets knocked. Once it lifts, moisture gets underneath and the lift spreads.

The Habits That Actually Extend It

  • Do not dismantle unless you must. Moving a chest assembled, even awkwardly, is kinder to it than taking it apart and rebuilding it.
  • Load drawers bottom heavy. The heaviest items in the lowest drawers keeps the centre of gravity down and spreads runner wear.
  • Retighten once a year. Ten minutes with the supplied key on every bolt. Fixings loosen from normal use, and a loose joint wears the timber around it, which is the damage that does not undo.
  • Keep corners out of traffic. Veneer edges fail where a vacuum, a chair or a hip hits them repeatedly.

A Reasonable Expectation

For a piece that stays put, is retightened occasionally and is not soaked, ten to twenty years is a fair expectation across all of these constructions. The solid acacia pieces sit at the top of that band because the surface can be brought back.

For a piece that moves house every two years and is dismantled each time, expect five to eight, and expect the failure to be a joint rather than the timber. That is not a quality problem. It is what repeated disassembly does to any fixing in any material.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fails first on timber furniture?

The fixings, the drawer runners and the veneer edges. The timber itself almost never gives out first. All three are affected much more by how often a piece is dismantled and moved than by its age.

How long should a chest of drawers last?

Ten to twenty years if it stays in one place, is retightened occasionally and is not left wet. Five to eight if it is dismantled and moved every couple of years, and the failure will be a joint rather than the timber.

Why do screws stop holding in furniture?

Each time a fixing is undone and redone it loses grip. In solid pine the hole can be plugged and redrilled. In MDF the hole crumbles and will not hold properly again, which is why repeated dismantling is the main killer.

Does veneer furniture last as long as solid timber?

On low contact surfaces, yes. The weak point is the edges, where a veneer lifts after repeated knocks and moisture gets underneath. Solid timber takes the same knock as a dent, which is recoverable.
