Hamptons style furniture, done properly

Hamptons is coastal classic, not beach themed. It comes from the weekend houses on Long Island: white paint, panelled joinery, generous proportions and enough natural timber to keep the room warm. Done well it looks calm and a little formal. Done badly it turns into blue and white nautical decor, which is a different thing entirely.

What defines the look

Panelled or shaker fronts rather than flat slabs. A light-dominant palette with white and warm neutrals carrying most of the room. Natural timber used as the accent instead of the base. And restraint in the hardware, because the panelling is already doing the decorating.

Building the room

In the bedroom, anchor with a panelled bed frame and repeat the finish on the bedsides and chest. In dining and living, the white acacia pieces do the same job around a table. Caring for painted timber

Painted fronts show marks more readily than stained timber, which is the trade off for the light palette. Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight after, and keep the pieces out of direct afternoon sun, because strong light will shift a white finish over a few years. The panelled sections collect dust in the recesses, so a dry brush is more effective there than a cloth.
