Contemporary furniture, done properly

Contemporary means current rather than a fixed historical style, and in practice that means clean lines, flat fronts and low horizontal storage. It is the most flexible look in the catalogue because it does not commit the room to a period or a palette.

What defines the look

Flat drawer and door fronts with no moulding. Storage that runs long and low rather than tall. Restrained hardware, often a simple bar or a recessed pull. And a two-tone palette, usually a timber tone against black, that gives the room contrast without pattern.

Building the room

This range is easiest to build across a whole open plan space, because the same finish covers both the dining and living halves. A long sideboard is the piece that ties the two together. Choosing between black and natural

Black anchors a room and works best where there is plenty of natural light to balance it, or where the floor is already pale. Natural keeps a smaller or darker room feeling open. In an open plan space, a common approach is natural for the dining table, which is the largest surface, and black for the low storage so it recedes against the wall.
