Short answer: a sideboard is storage first and a surface second. Style it so that every door and drawer still opens with one hand and nothing has to be lifted off the top to get into it. That single rule removes about half of what usually ends up on one.
The reason so many styled sideboards get stripped back within a month is not taste. It is that the styling blocked the thing the furniture was bought to do.
Map the Access First
Before anything goes on top, work out where the openings are, because the Cedora sideboards are laid out differently.

On a sideboard with a full width drawer under the top, like the Oxford, anything heavy placed centrally is in the way every time that drawer opens. On a layout with drawers to one side, the area above the doors is free to hold something that stays put.

The Three Zone Layout
A sideboard top divides into thirds, and each third wants a different job.
- The anchor third. One tall element, usually art or a mirror on the wall behind rather than an object on the surface. Wall mounted means nothing to move.
- The working third. Deliberately kept clear. This is where a serving dish, a bag or a stack of post lands. Every sideboard needs one and almost no styled sideboard has one.
- The grouping third. Two or three objects of different heights on a tray. The tray matters because it means the whole group moves in one motion.
Height Decides What Belongs There
Cedora sideboards run from 65cm to 86cm, and that 21cm changes the piece entirely.
At 85cm to 86cm, Oxford and Byron sit at kitchen bench height. These are working surfaces. Keep at least half the top clear and treat the styling as secondary.
At 65cm, the Richmond sits below dining table height. It reads more like a low console, sightlines pass over it, and it can carry taller objects without blocking the room. This is the one where a proper arrangement earns its place.

The Lamp Question
A table lamp on a sideboard is the most commonly recommended and most commonly regretted choice, because the cord has to reach a power point and it then crosses the front of the piece or trails down a door.
If the power point is behind the sideboard, a lamp works well and softens a dark corner. If it is not, a wall light above or a floor lamp beside does the same job without a cord across a working surface.
What to Leave Off
Anything that needs two hands to move, anything taller than the artwork behind it, and any grouping that spans a drawer front. Those three rules will strip a sideboard back to something that still looks considered and actually gets used.
