King vs Queen Bed Size: 30cm Wider, Not One Centimetre Longer

The single most useful fact about king versus queen is one that almost no size chart puts up front: a king is not a longer bed. In every Cedora range the king frame is exactly 30cm wider than the queen and identical in length, down to the millimetre.

That collapses the decision. If you are tall, moving up to a king does nothing for you. If you are two adults who keep waking each other, it does a great deal. And in both cases the room has to find 30cm it may not have.

Key Takeaways

  • King equals queen plus 30cm of width in all five ranges. Length is identical in every one.
  • Per sleeper that is 76.5cm on a queen against 91.5cm on a king, which is wider than a single mattress each.
  • A king needs about 321cm of room width to keep a 60cm walkway on both sides. A queen needs 291cm.
  • With a bedside table each side, a king needs 311cm of unbroken wall against 281cm for a queen.
  • If length is the problem, a king does not fix it. Read the frame length instead, which runs 215.5cm to 224cm here.

The 30cm Is Exact, and the Length Never Moves

Five ranges, and the step from queen to king is the same in all of them. It is worth seeing laid out, because the consistency is what makes the decision measurable.

Range Queen frame King frame Width gain Length gain
Bristol 162.4 x 215.5cm 192.4 x 215.5cm 30cm none
Newcastle 164 x 219cm 194 x 219cm 30cm none
Manchester 169 x 219cm 199 x 219cm 30cm none
London 169 x 218.1cm 199 x 218.1cm 30cm none
Liverpool 171 x 224cm 201 x 224cm 30cm none

The mattresses behave the same way. A queen mattress is 153 x 203cm and a king is 183 x 203cm, so the 30cm of extra frame is carrying 30cm of extra mattress rather than extra timber.

Compare that to the step below it. Going from double to queen buys 15cm of width and 11cm of length, which is why a tall person feels the difference immediately. Going from queen to king buys width only. We ran the lower step in double or queen bed.

What 30cm Buys Each Person

Split the mattress down the middle and the numbers get concrete. On a queen each sleeper has 76.5cm. On a king each has 91.5cm.

Ninety one and a half centimetres is worth pausing on, because a standard single mattress is 92cm wide. A king gives each of you very close to your own single bed, side by side. A queen gives each of you 15.5cm less than a single.

That is the real argument for a king, and it is a sleep argument rather than a luxury one. If one person moves at night and the other wakes up, the fix is distance between shoulders, and 15cm each is a large proportion of the gap. If you both sleep still, or one of you sleeps on the edge anyway, the same 15cm is money spent on floor space you could have kept.

What the Room Has to Find

Thirty centimetres of bed is 30cm the walkway does not get. Working from a 60cm minimum walkway on both sides:

  • Queen at 171cm plus two 60cm walkways needs 291cm of clear room width
  • King at 201cm plus two 60cm walkways needs 321cm

Three and a bit metres of clear width, with nothing crossing it, is a main bedroom number rather than a second bedroom number. In a 3.2m room a king leaves 59.5cm each side, which is right on the edge of usable, and in a 3m room it drops to 49.5cm, which is a sidestep rather than a walk.

The wall is the second constraint and it is the one people forget. A king with a bedside table on each side needs 311cm of unbroken wall: 201cm of frame plus two 55cm tables. The equivalent queen number is 281cm, and we measured the narrowest case out in the 273cm wall problem. Thirty centimetres more wall is a genuine hurdle in a room with a window or a robe on the same run.

Weight, Stairs and Getting It In

King frames are heavier, and by more than the 30cm suggests, because the extra width means longer slats and a longer headboard that both need more section to stay rigid.

Range Queen frame King frame Extra
Bristol 46kg 56kg 10kg
Newcastle 53kg 65kg 12kg
London 75kg 84kg 9kg
Manchester 78kg 89kg 11kg
Liverpool 86kg 86kg none

Every bed frame here arrives flat packed with assembly required and two people recommended, so the weight matters at the door rather than in the room. The number to check before ordering a king is the headboard: at 199cm to 201cm wide it will not go up a staircase with a tight landing without being turned, and the panel is only 6.8cm to 10.8cm thick, which is what makes that turn possible. Measure the landing diagonal before you order.

We put the full weight range across the catalogue in bed frames run 40kg to 99kg.

The Costs Nobody Prices In

Bedding. King quilts, sheets and mattress protectors cost more than queen and come in fewer designs, because queen is the volume size in Australia. Budget for a full set at the same time as the frame, not three months later.

Resale and moving. A queen fits more rooms, which matters if you rent. A king that does not fit the next place is an expensive thing to store.

The rest of the furniture. Once the bed takes 201cm of wall, the 140cm chest of drawers may no longer fit the room. Plan the whole layout before committing, not just the bed.

If length rather than width is the actual problem, neither size solves it. A Liverpool frame is 224cm long against the Bristol at 215.5cm, and that 8.5cm inside the same size label is where the answer sits. For anything beyond that, see super king bed frames.

A Three Question Test

  1. Do you have 321cm of clear room width, and 311cm of unbroken wall? If not, the king will work against the room every day. Stop here.
  2. Does one of you wake the other? If yes, the 15cm each is the most effective thing you can buy for it. If no, the queen is the better use of the money.
  3. Is the problem actually length? If someone is over 190cm, neither size helps, because the mattress is 203cm in both. Look at frame length and at the super king instead.

Two yeses and a no to the third means king. Anything else and the queen is the right answer, and the 30cm goes back into the room where you will notice it every time you walk past the end of the bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a king and a queen bed?

Thirty centimetres of width and nothing else. In every Cedora range the king frame is exactly 30cm wider than the queen with identical length. The mattresses follow the same rule: a queen is 153 x 203cm and a king is 183 x 203cm.

Is a king bed longer than a queen?

No. Both take a 203cm mattress and the frames are the same length within each range, from 215.5cm on the Bristol to 224cm on the Liverpool. If length is your problem, upgrading to a king will not fix it.

How much room do you need for a king bed?

About 321cm of clear width to keep a 60cm walkway on both sides, against 291cm for a queen. You also need 311cm of unbroken wall if you want a bedside table on each side.

How much extra space does each person get on a king?

Ninety one and a half centimetres each, against 76.5cm each on a queen. A standard single mattress is 92cm wide, so a king gives each sleeper very close to their own single bed.

Is a king bed worth it?

It is worth it if one person's movement wakes the other, because 15cm of extra shoulder room each is the most effective fix for that. It is not worth it for height, and it is not worth it if the room is under about 3.2m wide.
