A dining chair seat is the hardest working upholstery in the house. It takes food, drink, sunscreen, denim dye and the full weight of an adult several times a day, on a pad that is maybe 5cm thick and sits horizontal, which is the worst possible orientation for a spill.
The good news is that a dining seat is a small, removable, flat piece of upholstery, which makes it far easier to treat properly than a lounge. The bad news is that most people reach for a wet cloth first, and for two of the three most common dining spills that is exactly the wrong move.
Key Takeaways
- Blot immediately. What you do in the first sixty seconds decides most of the outcome.
- Oil and grease need a dry treatment first. Water spreads oil and drives it deeper into the foam.
- Red wine wants cold water and blotting, never hot water, which sets the tannin.
- Work from the outside of the mark inward, and dry the seat fast with airflow.
- Check under the seat: most fabric dining seats unscrew in four turns and are far easier to clean off the frame.
Which Chairs Have Fabric Seats
Three of the four dining chair styles here pair a timber frame with an upholstered seat pad, and one is timber throughout.
| Chair | Seat | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Byron Acacia Dining Chair | Upholstered pad on a white acacia frame | 47.6 x 54.1 x 88.5cm |
| Oxford Acacia Dining Chair | Upholstered pad on a white acacia frame | 46.8 x 55 x 88.7cm |
| Richmond Pine Dining Chair | Upholstered fabric seat, oak legs | 51 x 62 x 88cm |
| Liverpool Pine Dining Chair | Timber, no upholstery | 54 x 54 x 83cm |
If yours is the Liverpool, none of the wet methods below apply. Wipe it with a barely damp cloth and dry it, and treat it as timber. Everything else in the table has a pad that needs proper technique.
Before you start, turn the chair over. Most upholstered dining seats are held on with four screws through the frame into the underside of the pad. Taking the pad off means you can work on it flat, get at the underside, and dry it without the timber frame sitting in a damp patch. It takes two minutes and it makes every step easier.

The First Sixty Seconds
Whatever landed on the seat, the first move is the same: get the bulk off before it soaks in. Lift solids with the edge of a spoon or a blunt knife, working toward the centre of the spill. Blot liquid with a folded white cloth or paper towel, pressing straight down and lifting, over and over with a fresh part of the cloth each time.
Do not wipe. Wiping takes a spill that is 8cm across and makes it 20cm across, and drives it sideways into fibres that were clean a second ago. Do not use a coloured cloth either, because dye transfers into damp upholstery.
After that, what you do next depends entirely on what it was.
Red Wine
Blot hard, then apply cold water on a white cloth and keep blotting. Cold, not warm, and definitely not hot. Heat sets the tannin and turns a removable mark into a permanent one.
If cold water alone stalls, mix a teaspoon of clear dishwashing liquid into a cup of cold water, whip it to foam, and apply only the foam. Blot, rinse by blotting with a slightly damp clean cloth, and dry fast.
Skip the salt. It absorbs a little wine and then sits in the weave as an abrasive that grinds the fibre every time someone sits down.
Oil, Butter and Salad Dressing
This is the one where water makes it worse. Water spreads oil outward and pushes it deeper into the foam, and you end up with a larger, fainter, permanent shadow instead of a small dark spot.
Go dry. Cover the mark generously with bicarbonate of soda or cornflour, leave it at least an hour and preferably overnight, then vacuum it off completely. Repeat if the mark has faded but not gone. Only once no more oil is coming out should you consider foam cleaning the remaining discolouration.
Sauce, Juice and Coffee
Lift the solids, blot the liquid, then cold water on a white cloth working from the outside of the mark inward. Most water based spills come out entirely if you get to them before they dry. Tomato based sauces are the exception worth naming: they carry oil as well as pigment, so treat the oil dry first and the colour wet second.
Ink, Crayon and the Toddler Category
Do not experiment. Blot any wet ink, then dab with a cotton bud barely wet with isopropyl alcohol, tested on the underside of the pad first. Work in small dabs with a clean part of the bud each time so you are lifting the ink rather than spreading it. Crayon usually responds to gentle scraping and then dry powder, because it is wax and therefore oil.

Drying, and Why It Decides the Result
A dining seat is horizontal, which means gravity holds moisture in the foam instead of letting it drain. Slow drying is what leaves a ring, because evaporation pulls dissolved soil back up to the surface and deposits it at the edge of the damp area.
Three things fix that. Blot the seat firmly with a dry towel and your body weight to pull moisture up out of the foam. Feather the damp area outward with a barely damp cloth so there is no hard boundary. Then get air moving: a fan across the pad, or the pad stood on its edge somewhere ventilated. Not in the sun, which fades fabric faster than it dries it.
Put the pad back on the frame only when it is dry through, not just dry on top.
Keeping Them Clean in the First Place
Vacuum the seats with an upholstery tool when you vacuum the room. Dining seats collect crumbs in the seam between pad and frame, and crumbs attract everything else.
A fabric protector spray on a new set is worth the twenty minutes. It does not make the seat waterproof, it buys you the sixty seconds you need to blot before a spill soaks in, which is the whole game.
Rotate the chairs. In most households two chairs do 80 per cent of the sitting, and swapping them around every few months keeps the set wearing evenly rather than leaving you with two obviously tired seats.
If a set is coming to the end of its life, a seat pad is one of the few pieces of upholstery a non professional can genuinely recover: four screws, a staple gun and a metre of fabric. That is a real advantage of a pad on a timber frame over a fully upholstered chair, and it is part of why we lean the way we do in upholstered versus timber dining chairs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get red wine out of a dining chair seat?
Blot immediately with a white cloth, then work cold water in with more blotting. Never use hot water, which sets the tannin. If cold water stalls, use whipped dishwashing liquid foam, blot it out, and dry the pad fast with airflow.
How do you remove an oil stain from upholstered dining chairs?
Dry first. Cover the mark with bicarbonate of soda or cornflour, leave it at least an hour, then vacuum it off and repeat if needed. Water spreads oil sideways and pushes it deeper into the foam, so it is the last thing to reach for, not the first.
Can you take the seat off a dining chair to clean it?
On most upholstered dining chairs, yes. Turn the chair over and you will usually find four screws holding the pad to the frame. Working on the pad flat and off the chair makes cleaning easier and drying much faster.
Should you use a steam cleaner on dining chair seats?
Better not to. Steam saturates the foam, and because a seat pad is horizontal the moisture has nowhere to drain. Heat also sets protein based marks. Low moisture foam cleaning gives a better result with far less risk.
Which Cedora dining chairs have fabric seats?
The Byron, Oxford and Richmond chairs all pair a timber frame with an upholstered seat pad. The Liverpool dining chair is timber throughout and needs nothing more than a damp cloth.
